Why Tottenham are NOT a Top 4 team!

To say I'm absolutely fuming after that result would be like saying George Michael is "a little bit camp" or that Tevez is "not very good looking". I am absolutely, manically, psychopathically, kick a young child in the face livid.

This was it, our big chance to break the jinx that has lain heavy on our shoulders for 16 long years. Liverpool were not only without Gerrard and Torres, they were also without Johnson and Benayoun. Up against a high flying, technically gifted, full strength Tottenham side were the global superstars of Darby, Degen, Ngog and a long haired Greek gyps...sorry I mean 'traveller' who's name no-one can pronounce. It was set to be an embarrassment for Liverpool; their season so far akin to some kind of hamstrung, mortally injured deer writhing helplessly, bleating loudly, just wanting to be put out of its misery. You can almost picture Defoe and Crouchy jostling each other "You do it Crouchy, I can't, its so pathetic it just seems wrong", "No Jermain I don't wanna kill it, its lookin' at me, STOP IT FROM LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT".

Let's get one thing out the way first: Howard Webb continued his glorious tradition of screwing over every Tottenham performance he officiates. Primarily there was the inexplicably disallowed goal. A goal so blatant that even Andy Gray hinted that his beloved Gerrard FC might have 'gotten a wee bit of luck there'. Then there was the yanking of Crouch's shirt and the eventual bundling of him to the ground by Kyrgiakos, clearly a Liverpool free kick. The second appeal, a blatant trip on Crouch, surely a penalty? Webb, eyes darting side to side with fear at the noise of the Kop, points authoritatively to the bemused looking linesman, stood with his flag firmly down, whimpering something about offside. Every time Crouchy won a header he was 'backing in' or' using his arms', Howard Webb mincing up effeminately after the infringement and having a word with Peter, telling him he was too tall and it was unfair on the other players. I'm fairly sure I saw him blowing kisses at Rafa after the final whistle; waving like a lovestruck pre-pubescent girl and making the 'call me' sign with his fingers. When I see a letter from a "Mr H Webb" complaining about Tottenham's new stadium plans the pantomime plot will be complete.

Yet the truth, and this is the part that really hurts, is that we just weren't good enough. Once again we showed that when the pressure is on and when the fight gets tough, we sink and disappear without a trace. I hate to say it but I was actually happy when 'Arry brought Keane on. Yes he ended up being fairly ineffectual but big games need big characters and we have those in enormously short supply. For all the lovely passing and possession football, it seemed as though every player went in thinking 'Oh well, its been 16 years, if we don't win this no-one will care'. I hate to subscribe to the knee jerk media circus line of claiming Tottenham 'lack mental strength' only to then claim they've 'come of age' next time they win, but the evidence is stacking up. Liverpool had about as much genuine quality as a sleazy backstreet in Bangkok but they wanted it more, plain and simple, and that won them the game.

Our tactics did not help. Kranjcar has been a revelation since arriving and Modric is held up by most football fans as a world class talent but neither are out and out wingers. When played together, their penchant for cutting inside leaves the centre of the pitch enormously congested. 20 players all bunched together in the centre circle hacking each others legs in the vain hope of touching the ball may be one of Phil Brown's more sordid fantasies but it is not the way we play and certainly not the way we win. We look at our most dangerous when balls are being pinged out to the wings and play is being stretched. It worries me just how much we miss Lennon when he is out; his pace and the width he gives us are absolutely crucial to how we play. Both Modric and Krancjar went missing for us and the sooner we have a Gio or a Danny Rose to bring off the bench and shake things up the better.

I'm not going to run through the game exhaustively as I'm sure you all watched it but for me there were two small highlights. The first of these was Bale who really is starting to look like a great talent. His defensive weakness wasn't apparent as he tracked back well, looking good in the air and in the tackle. Going forward he was excellent as usual, invariably beating his man and putting in some dangerous crosses. Tottenham are still yet to win a Premiership game with him in the starting line-up and I have to clamp my hand firmly over my mouth everytime I see the teamsheet to stop a hysterical "BURN HIM" escaping. That said, he is playing well and growing in confidence; the sooner we banish this ridiculous concept of a hex to the dark ages, where it belongs, the better. I was also impressed with Hutton and, as I have said before, would be sad to see him go. He offers a considerably more combative and mobile option than Corluka who spends much of his time staring into space or crafting clumsily constructed daisy chains with his giant hairy paws. I know Hutton is reported to have serious personal issues but he goes in for tackles that make Joe Jordan wince and is never afraid to stick his head on the ball. Unless Naughton or Walker make the step up, 'Arry would be advised to keep him in the squad.

To move back briefly to my original point, Tottenham have scrapped for that elusive fourth spot for many seasons now, always failing for the same reason...we were not good enough. Well now, on paper at least, we are. We have a strength in depth that most manager's would sell their youngest daughter for and have a number of players who could slide easily into a Top 4 line-up. Yet, the reason we will not make the Champions League this season is that others want it more than us and over the course of the season that will inevitably overpower sheer ability. Man City will eventually break the top four and Aston Villa will always be knocking on the door. Next season Everton will be up there as will Sunderland and a free spending Birmingham. If there was ever a season to break the cartel this is it. Liverpool hasn't scuppered our season, it has just placed those familiar doubts in our mind. We still need a world class striker to partner Crouch and Defoe, we still need a midfield enforcer to give Hudd and Palacios competition but most of all we need the guts and desire to see things through. I am doubting you lads, prove me wrong!

  1. Modric a world class talent ? I think that's stretching it a bit. Sure he's an international and given time on the ball catches the eye, but he isn't physically strong nor particularly quick. Also I think having both him and Kranjar in the same side is a luxury we can't afford. Not enough steel between them by far.

  2. Absolutely spot on gr8 article !

  3. This is the sort of mentality that the article accuses the Spurs players of having

    For shame

  5. We are good enough on paper but there are no "winners" amongst the team- no one who can galvanize the team when things are not going well.

What also hurt more than anything was the way in which "that lot from up the road" got the required result after being 2-0 down, that's the kind of committment that's required if Spurs are to achieve their full potential!

  6. Good article, sums up my frustrations. How many more times are we going to fuck up what should be easy fixtures? Bring O'Hara back in, at least he gives a shit about the shirt.

  7. We missed Huddlestone. Jenas is better going forward but doesnt control the game or give that extra shield. How many times did the play need switching, both Modric and Kranjaer need the ball played to them when in space. I also think what Keane adds to the team, he helps keep possesion, he pulls players out of positions for the likes of Modric & Kranjaer to run into. But you cant fault Redknapp at starting Crouch away from home. Lets not forget that the first goal was slightly lucky, he couldn't have placed any better if he tried. If the Defoe goal counts could have been a completelty different game. We are still 4th (just) with everything to play for!!! COYS

  8. Agreed, however I think it is really shitty of us fans to quickly turn on the team once it doesn't go our way. The board were lit up with remarks that bordered on abuse.

We aren't a top 4 team, no question about it, but we are on the way to becoming one. Isn't that the whole goal?

Contrary to what the press have been writing, I watched yesterday's match and it wasn't as the masses have stated. It was a close match where Spurs pressed Liverpool for pretty much the entire second half. Liverpool attacks came from counter-attacks after soaking up near 80% possession.

'Arry's substitutions made sense except for Keane's. He was brought and pretty much took up the the role Kranjcar was playing. Why Redknapp is so determined to play Keane is beyond me. He hasn't shown anything thus far this season. With Dos Santos on the bench that should've been his option which would've added support to Bale. Hutton for Corluka made sense as Hutton is an attacking full-back who as you stated goes in for tackles. Bassong for Ledley however I don't understand why Bassong was dropped in the first place. So we have more doubts over Ledley which adds credence to reports that Spurs are interested in bringing back Kaboul from Pompey; although I prefer Juve's Giorgio Chiellini as a story. Rumours were also rife that Huddlestone may need surgery on his knee so it makes sense we are associated with Madrid's Mahamadou Diarra.

Hopefully yesterday's showing doesn't spill over to Saturday and they can get back to winning ways against Leeds in the FA Cup.

  9. Totally agree with the article. But with everything you have said, it's something we can improve on. The problem being timing. With Liverpool slipping up, it means that this year is the perfect year for someone to be breaking the top 4. I think that Howard Webb and the other officails have got an awful lot to answer for for last night. Someone needs to explain why Defoe was offside and why Crouch wasn't fouled, because the linesman was right in front of him and was so obviously pulled. These sort of decisions and play on your mind, and like me I'm sure the players were thinking 'what have we got to do to score?'
I am very quickly beginning to lose faith with Crouch when I will be first to admit I was happy when he joined. Our style of football is awful when he plays. Just bombing it up to him. He's not even very good in the air, just a target. And when we have players who can pass as well as they can why just hoof it up to Crouch. We need a decent holding attacker. Someone in the region of Berbatov (before he left). Maybe Pav on his day, but would not trust him to do the job now.

  10. Did not United lose 2-0 at anfield? So they are not top 4 material because Liverpool antifootball worked against them as well... Liverpool was doing even worse when they beat United...

Get the pain out and look forward... We are still forth, and City and Liverpool will have to play eachother as well...

  11. Some good points, and funny ones, especially regarding the ref but I think you overestimate our team or squad. We're not that good yet and our league position has been extremely flattered by several draws and unexpected loses by our nearest rivals. We're still deeply inconsistent and for some time have looked pretty much like a 7th place side. Harry has work to do and he knows it. We're in need of high wage quality we can't afford, roll on the new stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I love Tottenham but the players are all over-paid wank stains who will never be as good as they believe they already are.

  13. £10m for Bassong - the biggest joke EVER!! Younes Kaboul is far better than him.

  14. >I think it is really shitty of us fans to quickly turn on the team once it doesn't go our way.
Other way round pal, it’s the players and manager who have been continually bragging about how good they are. eg: we are better than Arsenal, better squad than Liverpool, world class players (Where? I haven't seen any), top 4 etc etc.
we are a slightly above average premier league side nothing more. The sooner the players & rednapp concentrate on playing football & putting a decent shift in, the sooner we might end up actually winning a game.
as for rednapp he hasn't match BMJ achievements yet, also BMJ wasn't a braggart like rednapp constantly telling anybody who will listen how good he is.

  15. Brilliant artical, I've just picked myself from the floor for laughing so much! And boy I needed a laugh after lastnight.

Forget about Harry spouting his usual driv "modric is our only worldclass player etc" Lennon is the only player we have that other managers and players FEAR, and for me he is the only player that could walk in to any team in any league. Without him our team lack an outlet and become slow!

City have pace all over, W-phil, Petrov, Bellemy,Teves, Richards & so on! it causes major probs for other teams. We have Two, Defoe and Lennon, one of which cant grasp looking along the line and staying onside.

We kept Six clean sheets with Daws and Bass, why play Led's he is as finished as my dinner! Last time I looked Arry was our manager not Benitez....why tinker?

Get rid of the dross, and bring in some class! we have a great opportunity now! only to waste it because we dont want to spend any dosh!

    COYS

  16. NK and mod are great but you need a player who can beat a man with pace. Without Lennon we should give Gio a go. We didn't get to the byline once against Hull or Liverpool which is poor.

  17. Very well written piece.
It was a really shocking performance. How is it possible to play so badly, just because you are away from home?
Its been Spurs problem forever & i just don't understand it. Its simple, sort out the away form & then we can challenge the top 4. We're far too easy & far too soft. Would you have witnessed such a surrender from anyone else around us in the prem? Don't think so.
We need a psychologist not a striker or midfielder.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I completely and wholeheartedly agree with anonymous

    ReplyDelete
  19. We need a leader in midfield, a manager on the field. a Lampard, a Gerrard, a Xavi, a Matheus, someone who can control the game and make his teammates better. And we need to see if someone will give us money for Keane and Pavlyuchenko and get a World class Forward to partner Defoe, someone who thinks he can score against Liverpool, ManU, Chelsea away...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Harry has had no experience of dealing with a team challenging for a top 4 finish and boy how it shows....Liverpool wanted the game more than us! Why wasn't Spurs fired up enough? Why didn't we finish Liverpool's season and put a nice big gap inbetween us and them? Because we are spinless arseholes with no bottle and will NEVER be a top 4 team as long as I have a hole in my arse

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was just as frustrated as you as I saw a Spurs team fail to turn up. I thought we wouldn't have a better chance than this to get the monkey off our back of not winning in 16yrs against the big boys. We do have the quality but we don't have it mentality right yet. I really think it will come if it's worked on and Harry is doing a fantastic job at Spurs he really is. The future is bright! Don't get carried away with one bad result.

  22. Great point made above "We need a psychologist".

  23. crouch just doesnt cut it and neither does jenas. they are both really really terrible. we miss lennon ALOT and hudd has done so much for us this season, since he added tackling to his game he has improved drastically. I wish he would play pav though he is such a great player.

  24. Stratty says:

Sort out this "anonymous" crap, lads - only GIRLS have Google accounts...

Meanwhile, yes it was a bizarre twist of emotions that made you glad that even the inept Keane was a welcome sub last night as someone who would be... hmmm... keen.

THE EXCUSES when our season dropped off before, was that Modric was out. Now its Lennon. Is it me, or has Modric returned half the player he was?

    ReplyDelete
  25. The other big issue that we have overlooked is that Liverpool had a CAPTAIN who shouted, cajoled, encouraged and bullied his team to win by showing guts, determination and enthusiasm. We do not have a captain;Ledley is a nice guy,Robbie is too busy pointing and complaining. We need someone who will kick Jenas' a$$,scream at Defoe to stay ONSIDE(!),and drive the players forward. We could do with a Roy Keane type to shake our players when we are away from home.

  26. We are not a top 4 team ,and never will be, Untill Levey starts to buy top class players, Also pay them top wages,{ I know he`s done a lot for spurs} ALL the top teams are clubs that spend big,And pay well, Untill we get some one in the club that is willing to do that,We stay a mid table club,

  27. Excellent article. I found myself agreeing with every word. Felt like I got a few things off my chest just by reading it. Thanks. And when we play without wingers its really does seem a good idea to use Bale AND Hutton (who looked good when he came on.

well, why play King, he's completly finished.
We play him, he is very slow now ,cant last a game out, and just disrupts the side.
It seems we play King and Keane because they
    used to be good.

  29. well before a ball was kicked I told all my fellow Spurs fans what would happen.Dont call our players because i have looked in the bag of tempo and its not legal trust me thats all I can say living 12 miles from the dippers and they are not alone . I feel sick inside more than any fan because this has been on my mind since i seen there tempo Garry Megson said when we drew 2-2 they played like Liverpool at a high tempo and we have a very good conditioner they did play well that day then went shiite and he got sacked .when Big Tom looks like on fire Evertons Fellani my campaign will end because we have joined is a level playng field and the best team will win.

  30. Currently our away form is amoungst the best in the league. We met a desperate liverpool last night, their tactics last might smalled of absolute desperation.

Slow the game down, choke the midfield, do anything to stop spurs apart from actually play football, they are a joke.

however WE must of known that struugling teams will set up defensively and counter us. Jenas was out of the game for to long periods and NK dident perform. The ref was a joke and liverpool just ran around like headless chickens.

Soon we will beat these teams, it hurts to loose but right now i would rather the spurs
team than the current liverpool side. after having played liverpool home and away we are honours even and 1 point infront.

Dig deep guys and do your best....we are ALL right behind you!!!

Pity Hutton didn't start this one as he loves bombing down the wing and Corluka seemed to miss having Lennon in front of him - Modric was often inside and behind him once he crossed the halfway line. Bale did have a good game, Ledley wasn't fit enough for it - he should have lent Bassong his shorts, he's been good enough to fill them this season. We missed Big Tom and composure deserted evryone in front of goal. We have to win v Fulham and Villa. COYS

  34. full strength? are you high? we were missing BAE and lennon. 2 of our better players and we replaced them with jenas who is just awful and needs to go away and bale who is inexperienced. i guess no one noticed that jenas never had the ball and we resorted to long balling it because we had no confidence in him at all. Lennon is the key and we need another player like him. but honestly i cant think of a player who shines as much as him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. spot on... we have great talent but then again short "real winners".... we're too weak in the midfield and sad to say jenas doesnt make the cut.

    ReplyDelete
  36. the players lacked the desire to REALLY win the matches.. no doubt about talent-wise in our current squad but they dont give their 200% in every game...thats why we're always blowing hot & cold.... we need cocsistency!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pav is so skillful, he would have given the Liverpool defence more to think about and may have been the difference for Spurs.

    ReplyDelete
  38. For me its simple. If you dont want to buy play your best youngsters

Livermoore-Better than Jenas and a good understudy to Hud

Rose-Can play on the left letting Niko and Mod play in the middle instead of cutting in and loosing shape.

Bostock-Better than Jenas and can play as a creative midfielder or in the hole.

Dos Santos-If lennon is injured its only logical that Dos Santos plays instead. If Keane is of Par the Dos Santos could do just as good a job or even better.

Harry has not gone for a blend of youth and experience but has decided to place our top 4 hopes all on experience alone, even when those so called experienced players are underperforming and lacking in hunger and desire to play which the youngsters normally have.

This half of the season should have been a chance to freshen up and make top 4 ours. We look stale as some players like Croach, Defoe and Keane even Niko feel asured of a starting place because Harry is not rotating enough to keep players on their toes so the give 100% when the play.

We have a big squad of UEAFA cup players that like to rest on their lawrels.

  39. unless harry decides to play gio or use his bench a lot better i am afraid we are going no where fast, what does our motto say WHO DARES WINS.just wish harry would read it and a get a pair.He tells us without Lennon with have no speed surely gio given half a chance to show us what he can do or even Pav or even Bentley just to change it around a bit just off the bench might be a good thing, 30mil seating on the bench what a waste(what did Harry say my wife could have scored well Harry i am sure most wives would not be afraid to use there assets off the bench to win a game) when you have such abundance of talent at your finger tips most mangers would kill for what you got

    ReplyDelete
  40. At least you can't blame a dodgy lasagne this time! I really wonder if Redknapp is a Top 4 manager? Was disappointed with Modric-the game was crying out for a Spud to take over the game in midfield...no one stepped forward! See how Cesc willed The Arse to victory against Bolton, through sheer bloody mindness and a rather large dollop of skill.

However, when you look at the table, Tottyham are still in 4th.....they say the table doesn't lie.

This season will prove whether 'Arry has the ability to take a team to the chmapions League. If he doesn't do the biz from here on in, then there will be lots of wailing & gnashing of teeth come season end.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well said mate, but I think we will miss out again. The crucial month will be in March, and I believe Liverpool will eventualy be there at 4th. It will take more time to break the big four. Our players at not hungry to be in the Champions league. Degen, Kygiokos, Ngog, Lucas, Insua they might not even be in our team, but they beat us. They were simply more determined to win. Credit to them!

    ReplyDelete
  42. We are a top 4 team. Have you seen the table? We are fourth. Case closed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. We're not good enough simple as that and it is not down to this performance alone. Stoke, Wolves and Hull City?? If you want to be a top 4 team you have to finish off teams like that. We don't win away to Liverpool, *rsena*l, Chelsea or Man Utd but I can live with that. What I can't live with is dropping points to relegation battlers.

That said, this time last year we were all sh*itting ourselves about going down, so to be in 4th spot with nearly 2 thirds of the season gone ain't bad.

  46. ok i didn't read everything cos its a long article but what i've read so far i believe everyword. what really pissed me off though was the fact we are trying to get an equaliser and we're having to bring bassong on for king who needed to go off at about 80minutes. u know we had 5clean sheeets on the bounce and harry decides to change our back 4 when there was no real need for that. and thats what made me just livid.and yes i thought beginning of the season we'd be able to get 4th but after our performances in the last few months. we are actually going downhill. im thinking we'll now be challenging 6th with aston villa. no way is their side even near the quality of ours but they seem to win.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I know we do miss Lennon, but for me, losing Huddlestone was more significant in terms of losing at Anfield.
Jenas has talent, but doesn't fit into this new system of 2 holding players - as plain and simple he's not a holding player.
Modric and Krancjar can go wide when they have the security of knowing they're both in the middle. I would have possibly stuck O'Hara in the middle, roaming from midfield as he's just come back from Portsmouth raring to go - and wouldn't venture too far forward.

I do feel that Harry should have gambled on either Rose or Dos Santos from the bench in the 2nd half though... we needed some extra pace and unpredictability to scare Liverpool.

We have a good squad, with a lot of options - it's time we used it fully or like you say, our chance will pass us by...AGAIN!

  49. Great Article and spot on!

The biggest and agonising issue which is facing today's Spurs team and a fair few from the 80's/90's is STEEL.

Spurs need an aggresive/creative midfielder to
partner Palacios and much the same with the central defense, Bassong needs a good kick-up the Arse-nal.

Also in general the team I feel needs to make more of an effort in attack and pitch-in and get those precious goals rather than rely on 4-5 key players.

    COYS!

  50. Spot on article. I think, the problem is that Harry sticks too much to his first options in player selection, and this causes some problem. Keane is more than awful in this season, I see no reason, why Pav, Gio or even Rose and Bostock cannot be given at least some chance to prove. Modric is also way off from his pre-injured form, Jenas is constantly awful, so there's plenty of options who to substitute, maybe permanently.....

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sorry to say it but there is something deep down that wants Harry to get done for tax avation so we can go for Hidink or Mourino.

Harry is just a caretaker manager although i do like him.

Thanks Harry, but the signs clearly show you aint top 4 managment material. You can prove me wrong if you like.

  52. It didn't seem like we went to win it at Anfield. The squad showed no sense of urgency or desire to put a foot in when it counted. The match started off in the right manner, but as soon as that defensive blunder gave them the lead, it all crumbled. I was very disappointed. Not because we should have won... but Liverpool are so frail these days that they should have lost.
