The Wealth of Young Talent at Harry's fingertips

Sorry for the recent delay in posting, I have spent the past couple of days with my head as far down a toilet as Bentley's head is up his own arse. Just thought I would share a few observations from the Peterborough game, please as ever feel free to disagree:

1) The Tottenham faithful - Ok ok so the atmosphere for much of the game was flatter than Susan Boyle but once again we have outdone ourselves by being one of the only fixtures in the country to sell out. Peterborough, with the greatest respect, were hardly the champagne derby fixture that every spurs fan was hoping for but there was barely an empty seat in the stand. Special mention should go to the reception given to Pav when he came off the bench. We have all read the comments he has made in the press and like him or loathe him, most feel he was never given a proper chance. The standing ovation he received and the deafening chant of 'Super Pav' were not lost on him as he clapped the crowd in return and threw himself at the ball for his first corner. Equally heartwarming was the almost homoerotic relationship Gomes continues to enjoy with the south stand responding to chants of "we love you Gomes we do" by thumping the badge and saluting the terraces. I truly hope reports linking us with James are the daydreams of bored and lazy journos. Gomes fully deserves his jersey and is fast becoming a Spurs legend; it would be both unwise and unfair to bring in another qualified keeper to 'mix things up'.

2) Tottenham's number 2?: Peterborough's Joe Lewis was superb from start to finish and it is little wonder that Capello has taken an interest in him. I have my doubts that Cudicini will ever represent Tottenham again and our number 2 slot is glaringly empty. I have previously stated that someone like Scott Loach would be an ideal signing and Lewis is in a similar mould; young, ambitious and homegrown. His reflex saves were top notch and his 6 foot 6 frame makes for a commanding figure. As chants of "Tottenham's number 2" echoed round the ground I realised I wasn't the only one incredibly impressed by the young keeper. Let us hope 'Arry looks very carefully into the alleged story that he has been offered for sale.

3) Robbie Keane - Once again the only comments I heard from the stands about Robbie were negative. At times when he was over in our corner people were shouting loud and abusive insults at him, many of which must have been audible. Everyone is entitled to an opinion about Keane; he is the ultimate Mr Marmite, but no true fan would ever treat him the way he was treated on Saturday. Personally I would agree with the majority that Keane is no longer good enough to help the club push up the table and despite the arguments about him boosting team morale I would sell him if the right offer came in. Yet one thing no-one can deny is that Keane works incredibly hard for the team and he deserves credit for that alone. Much has been posted about his reaction to the penalty he scored, looking downcast and world weary but how many players can keep their head high when they have lost the love of the fans? If Keane is here to stay then he needs the our vocal support on matchdays to recapture his form, if he is on his way out let us at least give him a positive send off. The move to Liverpool was a mistake but Keane is a Tottenham legend and does not deserve the level of hatred he is being forced to endure.

4) The left wing conundrum - There was a time when an injury to Lennon spelt disaster to a Tottenham season; this time it has spelt only opportunity. Krancjar has been a revelation since joining us and as things stand I would not bench him in favour of Modric. The gap that has opened up on the right hand side allows 'Arry a perfect opportunity to nurse Modric back to full health without having to drop the excellent Krancjar from the team. Modric's future is in either the centre or the left hand side of midfield but he was very comfortable playing out on the right and one assumes this is where he will stay until Lennon's return.

5) The wealth of young talent - I published an article on Naughton a couple of weeks back and had a good response from Blades fans all of whom seemed to rate him. It was obvious to see their criticism that he is still a little light weight for the Premiership but he's still young and can learn much from Defoe in the battle to bulk up. Aside from this he displayed excellent pace, composure and awareness. If he continues to improve I would expect to see him seriously pressuring Charlie in a season or two's time.

Danny Rose was often referred to as 'the left footed Lennon' because of his blistering pace and poor final ball. Yet apart from one ballooned cross I thought he played very well. His control and first touch were impeccable even when dealing with difficult passes and he demonstrated an ability and a willingness to take people on. Peterborough's right back had an absolute nightmare trying to close him down and the penalty came as no surprise. If 'Arry can get his staff working on Rose the same way he has done with Lennon; focused running and final delivery especially, there is no reason why a few seasons from now we can have the fastest wing attack in the country.

Bale, for me however, was the stand out performer. I fully realise the constant criticism he is unable to defend but there was no evidence of this particular failing on Saturday. Certainly he will come up against tougher challenges than Posh but he stood up well, was decent in the air and put in a couple of impressive slide challenges. Going forward he was excellent, linking up well with Hudd, Keane and Krancjar. The second and third goals were his own creations and he looked a threat whenever he was on the ball. What a terrible shame we no longer need a left winger as Bale is certainly beginning to look the part. Once again he needs serious work on the training ground in basic defending but fantastic to see the boy displaying the talent we all know he has.

Leeds up next and hopefully another run out for some of the fringe.

  1. Good points... bar one. Robbie Keane.I've had a season ticket for 8 years now so ive seen the rise and fall of robbie and honestly he deserves every critisism he gets.

He was never that impressive till Berba who made him stand out as keano just tapped in all of his rebounds... he was by far the most feared striker from 3 yards in the prem. When berba left he looked half the player and i was overjoyed when liverpool came in for him. To be fair he wanted trophies and he's not gettin any younger so you cant blame him for going but if he's not good enough for them, why take him back!!

He is slow, he cant header, jumping nearby to look like he's made an attempt. he constantly moans when he loses the ball although he is never right... he is far too easily nudged off the ball and i dont know what games you have been watching but work rate??? he runs a fair bit but he never has the ball. whats the point?? not even to close down players most the time. whenever he has the ball he comes backwards in a poor immitation of the modric role.

To summarise we need him out if we want anything to do with the champions league... I love crouch but i think we need a player with world class to partner JD, thats all were missing.

  2. "When berba left he looked half the player and i was overjoyed when liverpool came in for him".

    Robbie Keane left before Berbatov.

  3. Robbie Keane may have ACTUALLY left first... but he was still playing for Spurs when Berbatov's head wasn't right... so although he was off the books first, he was still playing long after Berba had kicked his final ball!!!

  4. You moan about Keane, and Bales' treatment, but slag Bentley off, well 'no true fan....', you can't deny that he hasn't been given a fair chance either.

  5. fuck off robbie keane. useless judas

  6. Being in the US I do not get to see enough of the games, but those I do get recorded and that gives me a chance to review individuals. You are right about Crouch, a lot to like but not good enough with his head or fast enough over the ground, though he can hold the ball up and distribute it. Agree about Keane; is it low confidence? I have always liked Bale, competent in defence, clever in attack, with a good eye for distribution. As to Bentley, I get the feeling he blew his chances in practice games and in training - lack of commitment/desire.

  7. You criticise quite rightly on the abuse suffered by Robbie Keane yet make a nasty comment re Susan Boyle who, as far as I know, has never done anything negative to Spurs.
    Just inconsistent journalism.

  8. Livermore looked good pre-season too and Bostock may well come into the reckoning at some point.
I was impressed with Rose pre-seasaon but the general feeling was that he wasn't good enough.
Perhaps things have changed fter Peterborough.

  9. Modric only started to look a player last season when his intelligence was complimented by Keanes!!!

  10. I love it - who does actually know what theyre talking about here, keep the bollocks coming!

  11. When someone is low whether it be confidence based or otherwise the last thing they need is abuse,as this only helps to demoralise them further, and so the endless cycle continues with absolutely no one benefiting,

Robbie or anyone else for that matter needs the support of those around him, give him that chance no matter how long it might take, and benefits will be reaped by all parties.

  12. The treatment to Robbie shows this new bread of supporter don't no how to forgive and forget.I had talent looks skill and could use my fists with the speed of Lennon but the best gift i learned was forgiveness it is a very humbling experience. And battling a painful spine disease for most of my life and having a plastic hip at 34 getting a divorce at 28 with two young children left in the aftermath .Then meeting a new partner and having a daughter to look after and a new Home to rebuild and now at 58 in April and waving goodbye to my ex wife has she leaves our home after visiting me and my partner of 28 years. I still think Forgiveness is one of our better gifts in life something our children have lost in a texting and face book age .One Fan said he heard a man of 40 shouting when the crowd fell silent c-nt to the top of his voice no wonder Robbie looked sad lets hope he scores the winner on Sunday it wont bother me if he is sad then because his name will once again ring out theres only one Keano and he will always be a Spurs Legend to the forgiving and Humble fans of our great club.COYS.Davspurs

  13. There is a big difference between levelling critiscm at some people and giving them abuse.

Yes its clear to everyone that Keane is not what he was. He has clearly lost that yard of pace and quick feet that made him so succesful for spurs. Its a shame but a player like Keane relies so heavily on this ability that when it wains they really look average (see Michael Owen).

But Keane has given years of service and done a terrific job for spurs. It makes me cringe when I see or hear idiots giving him abuse.

    Juvenile d!ckheads

If people have a problem then shout at Harry for picking him but whilst he is at this club he is going to have some role and the fans need to support him.

He needs to go in January that is clear, he has very little to offer the side now, despite his effort but these toss€rs giving him abuse, well you need to take a long hard look at yourselves, Not surprised so many fans get on spurs supporters backs when we have pr!cks like some of these posters.

And as for this comment ''annoymous said......Modric only starter to look a player last season when he was complimented by Keane''.........dont kid yourself, modric doesnt need keane to be a brilliant player.

    Nice blog
    Looking forward to Sunday
    COYS!!

  14. Keane needs to improve, but he scored, and played both passes to Bale for his two assists. No he isn't the player he was when he left us, but if you're not on form, and not getting game time, abuse is hardly going to help.

His half chances came to him on his left foot, which for a right footed striker isn't great. Defoe didn't get abuse for hitting the bar, so why is Keane being singled out?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Didn't go and there was hardly any coverage of the game, so thanks for your efforts.

Haranguing Keane at the game isn't really on, but I will say this, he isn't the same Robbie Keane that left for Liverpool so he might be fair game.

His defection left a sour taste in the mouth of a lot of Spurs fans and he's done hardly anything to turn those bad feelings around. Way off the pace, slows the attacks down, technically poor and always getting over excited at imaginary wrongdoings against him; it's becoming painful to watch.

I can understand Redknapp's reasons for bringing him back, but he never should have come back. The faster he's moved on again, the better for all concerned.

  16. Well said Davspurs!
We live in a very shallow society now, where a crowd gives you the right to say what you wouldn't say on the street!
Two years ago, Keane could do no wrong, please people, don't be shallow.

  17. I don't understand this love of Robbie Keane and one comment called him a "Legend"???
The same people who praise Keane get on Berba's back when he comes to the Lane, when who did worse by us?
We knew Berba wanted to leave a year in advance and although he acted like a child we got £30m for him, not his fault we didnt buy a replacement. Keane picked up and left at the first opportunity with no warning, even though we had recently sold Defoe, leaving us with just one striker.
Spurs fans don't owe Keane anything, I pay over a grand to go every week...Keane must earn at least 60 times this a week, excuse us for not being concerned with the poor fellas feelings. People talk of his work rate but the truth is he makes no attempt ever to win the ball, he doesnt challenge in the air, actually he doesnt even jump! he doesnt attempt to tackle, he rarely makes any physical contact with opposing player. and in full agreementof the first comments that he only ever really looked that good when playing off the talent of Berbatov.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I do feel bad for Robbie. My husband keeps saying that we can't sell him, as he is "Mr Tottenham." I don't know though, he hasn't been the same since he came back from Liverpool...

    ReplyDelete
  19. It is one thing to abuse someone online but another to constantly abuse someone to their face. Our crowd is embarrassing - do they honestly think yelling crap about our own players helps them at all? It only hurts the team. If you can't help yourself, why not yell crap about the opposition and help our own guys for once. If the fans aren't trying their best to help us finish higher than we have in lightyears and in fact happen to be determined to undermine us, why do we expect our players to do their best to get us into the top four? We lose together and we win together. We have no fortress at the Lane, when it crumbles at its foundations.

Keane has scored over 100 goals for us. He is the second highest goalscorer in the league in the last decade, he has the same goalscoring record before and after Berba. We've seen how badly good players can play when their confidence is lost before - just look at us last year under Ramos, and the transformation under Harry. It doesn't take any sympathy or kindness to realize that players cannot play well when they hear themselves called crap that elsewhere would get your ass kicked.

I don't think Keane can ever recover his form here until our petty crowd gets its act together. Let him go to Villa or Sunderland or whatever, he will probably regain form there but at least we will let go the air of negativity surrounding our team, or more likely simply pick another target.

    ReplyDelete
  20. In fairness it shouldnt have come to this, he clearly has not been good enough for some time now and the manager should have dropped him long ago, and it is simply time to get rid!
and despite running around like a headless chicken, a lack of any proper effort to get involved does merit some criticism from paying customers.

  21. RE Anomymous 6:08
What Berbatov was far worse. Keaen didn't agitate for a move. When told of the offer he said he would like to go (it seemed like a good career move, and to his boyhood club), I don't see that as being so terrible. berbatov, on the other hand, constantly agigated for a move. When Liverpool came in for Keane and were quoted a price, they met it straight away. Fergie, on the other hand, ttried to cheapskate by over £10 million, and with the deadline fast approaching The Bulgar refused to play (REFUSED TO PLAY), almost forcing his present employers (to whom his first loyalty should have lain until sold), to accept an inferior offer. The popint that Keaen left first is very relevant: the board clearly hoped that by selling one they could keep the other, but The Bulgar still behaved the way he did even after Keane had been sold, knowing full well he was dropping the club (his present employers) deep in the poop. And then there was the whole fiasco where he was supposed to be going to Citeh and managed to land up at OT with old Red Nose clearly loving every second of the disrespectful way our club was being treated. And you think Keane did far worse!
People like you really do crack me up. You really think that paying more makes you opinion more important. Well, for the record I haven't been to a live game in years. That is primarily because I went back to school and got an education (after being a grafter for many years). So I have been reaelly skint. But I do understand that shaking the morale of one player could shake the morale of the whole team...and when we are talking about a player who 'Arry has specifically mentioned for the impact he had on team morale when he returned (something that was seriously lacking) that is a pretty dan=mned serious point. So, you pay a lot of money so that gives you the right to destroy someone's career, and possibly the hopes of the supporters whose team is going to suffer in the morale stakes consequently. Pathetic.

ps The original article was a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Your all oblivious to the main screw up's in all of this.....THE BOARD!!!!

The season we were were 4th for the whole year only to miss out on the final day we had NO BERBATOV IN THE TEAM.....shall I say it again.....WE HAD NO BERBATOV and yet we sat 4th for a WHOLE year.....the next year we signed him, then after finishing 5th after his first year with us his head was turned by United...he wanted to leave, Martin Jol knew this and wanted to sell him, cos why keep a player who's not happy......but no no no, our board basically refused to listen to Martin, they listed to Commolli and the rest as they say is history!!!

As for Robbie.....until Berba joined he was never first chioce, it used to be Defoe/Kanoute with Keane/Mido the rotations if anyone remembers.

Oh and Berba by the way would still be there if the board had actually signed Martin Petrov (at Man City now) like Martin Jol begged them to do, but they wouldn't pay him £70k.....funny how there paying that to all our top boys now......just imagine we had signed him and Berba and Keane continued to flourish with Petrov feeding them from the left and Lennon from the right......mouthwatering thought isn't it....

Aaah dreams......I love football, but none of our players deserve to be put down by there own fans at the stadium, have some pride in the club and just support them all on the pitch at all times!

    Amen!

  23. I can see both sides here, but the person who said it should have never of got this far is right.

We're not talking about a few bad games here, we're talking about half a season. If Redknapp hasn't got the bollocks to see he made a mistake in bringing Keane back and is guilty of favouritism, then I'm glad the fans are voicing their opinion and taking the matter into their own hands.

No-one likes to see their own players getting bad mouthed by their own fans, but our club deserves better and must not settle for any player who is past his best. That path leads to mid-table mediocrity.

This season is great a great opportunity to finally qualify for the CL. If it means bashing one or two overinflated egos, then it has to be done. Start playing or clear off (again).

    ReplyDelete
  24. For all the to-ings and fro-ings about Keane past and present, before and after Berbatov, who damaged the club more with a move etc etc, I should highlight one important point...we are not the board.

I agree with all the comments that supporters pay money and have the right to an opinion, I merely feel it is sometimes misdirected and often over-zealous. Keane is here and whether he lacks the ability or not, he cares about each and every game and works hard for the team. Perhaps the board made a mistake bringing him back, perhaps 'Arry makes mistakes starting him but don't heckle Keane.

I draw attention to my previous point:

"If Keane is here to stay then he needs the our vocal support on matchdays to recapture his form, if he is on his way out let us at least give him a positive send off"

Being abused by his own fans will not make him up his game and will only cause trouble in the dressing room. Support him everytime he comes out the tunnel and trust in 'Arry to deal with his future, whatever it may be.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think any Spurs fans should boo or shout abuse at any player who is wearing the spurs shirt it's just sad and the past is what it's called the past get over it and move on.

  26. Rednap needs to eat humble pie. End of.Hope Keane scores against Liverpool before he's shipped on the last day of the transfer window.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i admit keane is past it but we need to be selling pavlchenko first then bring another striker in first coz if we sell both of them we gonna leave arselfs panic buyiny for strikers coz we would only have two we need a class striker like a 100% van nistellroy and people might disagree wiv that but hell get us goals wiv defoe

    ReplyDelete
  28. Spurs still need a leader a winer to lead us into fourth spot and maybe beyond our record against the top four is bad.We need to keep all our players including Keane to help us get there.United did not sell giggs when he was going through a bad patch a few seasons ago.Who will we get to replace keane at this stage most of the best strikers are still involved in champs league. We need a Gutaso from ac millan to bolster our squad.Somebody with some gutts and determination.Central defender and midfeild cover required.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have read most of these and the feeling seems to be he should move on for both concerned but not to many offering his replacement. If Robbie and Pava move in this window who should we buy or try to buy(two different things).I would go for Jones at Sunderland as i feel he is big ,powerful and has pace and could work well with Defoe but would these three be enough to get us that 4th spot?I would also try to get Baloletti from Milan on a sixth month loan espicially as they might have got Pandev.Baloletti is a bit of Jones and Defoe in one and would make a great guy to have in the squad but can't see that one happening pity because he looks the dogs swingers. The second half of the season is the worst as teams are fighting at both ends of the league and points are tough and we need a top squad to compete and i worry we are short in a few areas keeper, centre midfield and striker.Imagine this Defoe gets a 3 match ban and wilson is out for a month with a injury who takes their place that can score the goals they do and tackles they make.Add to that the octopus gets a injury(gommes) who takes his place that is as good answers anyone please.

  30. May I remind our fans Bobby Zamora could not score to save is Life then six came all at once Stoke where the worse scoring team and where 3=0 up at Half time .My point is this sometimes what your eyes see is not always the truth every player sportsman in the world have bad seasons it could be many reasons Family Drink drugs .Robbie going to Liverpool was never going to work because Benitez never wanted Keane it was Barry. And if you watched the French game and Irish qualifiers he was class and I told Keane on many Bloggs that he wouldn't fit in and wouldn't become a Duracell Bunnie because he would not be playing much. Its this betrayal after leaving a club he still had feelings for for is boyhood team and then getting left to rot is still with every cunt shit twat and any other disgusting abuse hurled at him has had more affect than some of the stupid things said hear he has lost pace fucking Giggs is not far of Lennon and he is 36 .I wont call Keane till his face is sunk and he runs across the pitch chasing the ball like a demented dog like Teves and Rooney to name a few .And all you fuckers shouting about Keane Teves went 16 games before he scored remember he jumped in the crowd and he has not stopped running since do think Bellamy has just started showing us he is world class Bollocks He is nuttier than Barton and higher . So when you are saying he is past it take a bloody good look at who is suddenly gone faster there was 22 playing tonight for a start and lean looking skeletons one and all .so hears some good advice leave you bad mouthing for the real villains that swallow shite to make them play well and score and leave Robbie alone because this lot on Sunday would make him look like he is stuck to the floor and I no fucking why they are called the Duracell and why I have been called a daft twat and other names by ignorant bastards who ignore cheats and boo legends total wankers watch GERRARD KUYT TORRES BENAYOUN Run the legs of Spurs and the fat weighter will be saying I told you we would finish in the top four because he has is team energized like he did against UTD. The reel Liverpool is the Reading one . Somebody said to me if they are taking stuff why haven't they bean caught Two Word Barwick and Gill are making sure at the head quarters th new drug laws should be thirty top players thanks to them possible ten a sham to keep the cartel at the top.

  32. Before we get too excited about the wealth of talent lets bear in mind that we are still weak in several areas.

If we want to challenge for a top four finish we need to be stronger.

If we do not strengthen in January we risk missing this opportunity and it could be years before a chance like this comes around again.

Don't miss the boat Spurs and fail on the final day. Strengthen the squad so we can push on further.

  33. One question to all of those claiming Keane is no good.

What are the RESULTS of the games Keane has played in since he returned ?

I am sure none of you will want to address this so let me do it for you.

The RESULTS when Keane has played have been EXCELLENT.

  40. Agree all through. Ignore the duffers who slag Keane....spineless gutless twits posting behind 'Anonymous'. Not every kid out of his mother's womb is going to be a Spurs fan especially so if you are not a Londoner. He went to a club he supported as a youngster at a time when Spurs were rubbish under Ramos. It failed and he came back. Big deal. He plays in a Spurs jersey and still gives his best for which he deserves support not brain dead crap from morons in the crowd. Berba did not make him look good, they were both good for each other (next thing these clowns will say is Crouch makes Defoe look good). Hey I don't like Bentley and Jenas and would love to see them out of Spurs, but when they are on the field playing for my club I SUPPORT THEM! OHara wants to stay at Pompey...does that make him Judas? It's his livelihood and if he sees his future at another club shouldn't he be given the chance to make it elswhere? Judas? my foot...So stuff these pea brained jackasses and support the team NO MATTER WHO PLAYS!

  41. If you want spurs to do well and finish 4th then don't do anything to discourage the players the manager chooses for the squad. It makes no sense. On his day Keano was excellent. Although he misses too many chances and I would like to see his shipped out when he is on the pitch or the bench he must get our support. If we miss out on 4th spot by a point can we as fans honestly say we supported our team in the best way given the boos to Keane.
