Tottenham's Unbeatable 12th Man Wins Us Another 3 Points

Gents apologies for my recent absence. I have been involved in lengthily discussions with the tabloids over a fee for the pictures sent to my sister and mother by what I have to describe as 'an anonymous Chelsea left back'. Based on the evidence presented to me...lets just say he's no Ledley King.

A rain soaked quagmire in Wigan is hardly the characteristic setting for a fairytale, Pavlyuchenko is hardly the name of a Prince but Sunday afternoon saw an ending that would have had Walt Disney bawling his eyes out. Ok, so the result was no 9-1, in fact it wasn't even a particularly impressive performance, but there are a couple of things that I felt compelled to record to posterity.

First of all it was nice to see us having a bit of luck. Defoe was so far offside for the goal I thought he was having a chat with Kirkland. Indeed, the way he reluctantly picked the ball out the net ready for a freekick said it all. Perhaps the linesman couldn't see through the downpour, perhaps the occasion of a packed DW stadium got to him, perhaps closet Spurs fan Gordon Brown had had one of those 'chats' with him at number 10. Anyway who cares. As 'Arry said afterwards 'sometimes ya get em, sometimes ya dunt'. We usually don't, this time we did, Huzzah!

Secondly something must be said about Wigan's impressive recreation of the Somme. Paul Merson, shortly before wrapping a red and white scarf round his neck and eating a prawn sandwich, claimed the conditions were most likely to hinder the home side's 'flowing passing game'. In fairness, both teams deserve a medal, and possibly counselling, after completing 90 minutes in conditions resembling the toilets at Glastonbury. When I saw little Luka strip off his tracksuit I felt genuine dread. My mind flashed forward to a vision of him, thrashing wildly, shoulder deep in mud and squealing out for Krancjar and Charlie. As it was, he proved an inspired substitution, unlocking the Wigan defence with some determined running and incisive passes.

Then there was Pav. I am not going to start waxing lyrical about our grinning, blonde mulletted Russian. At times he looks lazy and disinterested, like a considerably less technical Berbatov, albeit one who knows what a smile is. Indeed 'Arry has hinted time and time again that he doesn't put in full shift in training and has made it abundantly clear he is infuriated by his lack of English. Still, we are easily won over and after Leeds and now Wigan he must be given his chance. 'Arry need only remember the plight of Bentley and Bale before writing off Pav. Indeed, rumour has it the board were considering a bid from London Zoo for Bale before his run in the team; they have since focused their attention on acquiring Emile Heskey for the donkey enclosure. The way the players mobbed him says much for the kind of character he must be. We will need every striker firing on full cylinders in the push for fourth, Pav could still become a spurs legend.

However, for me, the most memorable aspect of both the Bolton and the Wigan game was the fans. This wasn't Fulham, this was the mythical 'North' where cannibalism and Viking raids are still commonplace. Yet, there they were in their thousands, a sea of white and blue. As both home teams struggled to fill even half their stadiums, we were there, packing a whole stand and drowning out the wind and rain. I can claim no credit having watched both matches desperately hungover on the sofa but it was enough to bring a tear to the eye. Even as we disappeared without a trace in the first half at Bolton, the fans could still be heard loud and proud driving the team on. Lets not kid ourselves, for all Arry's protestations to the contrary, for all his claims of 'im trainin really well this week', it was the fans who had Pav put on. As the game wore on the chants became too persistent to ignore, and what a fine bunch of tacticians we all are. There are clearly backroom forces at work at Spurs but you could see from Pav's celebration just how much the fan's support meant to him. Many things are beyond our power as humble supporters, but the adulation of the fans is the ultimate goal of every player, and chants of 'Super Pav' might just dissipate our Russian's homesickness come summer. If only Crouch was as good as our support...

  1. Was at the Bolton game, their fans are a fucking disgrace. Made me proud to be a Lillywhite.

    Good shout on Heskey haha.

  2. Harry makes me laugh. He goes on about how Pav doesn't put in a full shift in training. If this is how he judges players - then what about King. If it's all about showing it in trainig, then King should be paying Spurs to be at the club. Is it really any coincidence that Modric played brilliantly when he had a clever striker to play with - I don't think so.

  3. Go to Wiki and read Empire of the Kop - Be patient - ask Peter Crouch.Says it all - thats why Spurs will not be in 4th place - Crouchy is very skilful - he's losing confidence by the week and i'm not surprised with some of the twoddle on these sites. Look in the Times and other papers - Crouchy is rated higher than Defoe and others in the team and yet is coming under the cosh - just like you did to Keane. Seems to me you'd rather have selfish goal hangers like Defoe than selfless professionals who work for the good of a team. Defoe has only two assists this season - has it not dawned on you why Defoe has scored so many goals? how many has he scored in the games without Crouch recently?
It would serve you right if Crouch is dropped sagainst Bolton and you get put out of the cup.
Liverpool fans ( and I am not one) had alot of respect for Crouch and didn't want him to leave - you lot would rather have a player who whinges and desperately wants to leave.
I see the midfield escape criticism again!!!

  4. I'd like to add/reiterate that for a change Harry made some decisive and positive substitutions, its been something that we've sorely lacked in many games and the introduction of Modric and Pav enabled us to run Wigan ragged at a time when both sides were looking weary. From what i've seen of Pavlyuchenko during his limited opportunities for Spurs it'll be our loss if he does end up moving on in the summer, I for one hope that him and Defoe can provide the goals to keep us in 4th place until May, even if it is at the expense of Peter Crouch, who has been a great foil for Defoe but lacks the goals to be a guaranteed selection. COYS!

  5. The question you have to ask is - would Pav be as effective were he to be on at the start of the game - and would he be able to sustain it for a whole game - put him on asa supersub - but not in the starting lineup. Crouch has to be the most underrated player ( in Spurs fans terms) on the pitch. others can get away with coasting - for instance where is Spurs' Gerrard or Lampard??? And would Defoe score as many goals without Crouch?? I doubt it. Its not about individual players - its about the team

  6. I thought Spurs were winning before Pav came on????

  7. I don't know what the hell is going on today, by the comments on some of the blogs you'd think we'd got hammered yesterday. It seems that some fans were genuinely disappointed that we'd won as it had nipped their little 'lynch Redknapp' party in the bud.

Well done all the guys for pulling together as a team and to the fans that were there for being a part of that.

  8. Agree that Pav is not a 90 minute player. Just look at how many times he was substituted last season when he went missing. Crouch is an intelligent player and Harry knows it. I believe Harry will get the first 11 right when Gudjohnsen and Aaron Lennon are fit again and the Harry haters will eat loads of humble pie.
The away support deserve all the thanks they get for being that 12th man. Long may they reign.

  9. Of course Pav should start. The fans aren't responsible for Crouch's blatant loss of form, nor were they to blame for Keane's ineffectiveness.
You play the players who are producing, that's elementary. No doubt Crouch will come back, but not until Pav disappoints.

And as to whether Pav might not make it as a starter, versus as a sub, we'll find out soon, I hope.

As fot the Spurs supporters at Wigan, like always, they were marvelous.

  10. Spurs Thro & Thro22 February 2010 at 18:15

3 points people....and next up is bolton and everton and City...defining moments in the season where it can all come unstuck....all I ask for is that whoever gets selected, they put in a decent shift....and no J. Jenas pleeeeeaaaassssssseeeee....

  11. Defoe combines wll with Crouch no doubt and from the little time Pav was on the pith he combined well with Crouch too..So question should be rather who should start alongside Crouch since he is no finisher as we saw then he needs a finisher to start alongside him. Sure Modders set up Pavs goal but there were good moves between C & P..... and finally positive move from Arry towards the end of the game which gave us the comfort zone.....

  12. Personally I dont have a problem with Crouch - just the way we play when he is in the team.

I think he is a brill substitute to bring on when the game needs changing and passing football has failed but to start with the long high ball just wears me out.

  13. Pav should be given the nod to start against Bolton. Many people doubt his ability to stay on fire throughout a whole match, a part of me agrees. But he needs his chance to prove so.

  14. Not going to wade into the Crouch/Pav debate but funny article. Enjoyed reading it.

I was at the Wigan game...immense...

  15. Is Anonymous 12:09 forgetting that Liverpool had both Keane and Crouch and sold the both of them?! Yeah Liverpool really rated them highly didn't they. Knob.

  16. Agree with above. If I had David NGog up front I'd probably want Crouch back as well. Crouch is useful as an impact sub but not good enough to lead the line. Not sure Pav is either but must be worth a punt?

  17. Pav. doesn't have to play 90mins. that's what subs are for.
But he is fired up and more likely to score early than Crouch who maybe works hard but is a very poor footballer and encourages us to play very poor football.

    Good enjoyable read.

  19. Great article. I've really missed your blog of late.

I too have been absent from the blogging scene of late, althought I doubt my return will be greeted with as such a giant and warm virtual hug as yours.

    Keep it up.

  20. Hi,

I came across your blog and enjoyed reading it. I'm sorry that this isn't in the right place but I couldn't find a contact form or email address to get in touch with you.

I'm emailing because I'm working on a new game called Football3s. Football3s is a real-time game that you play whilst watching a live game on the television and the action on the pitch directly relates to the action in the game. You can take a look at http://football3s.com if you'd like.

We're covering the England game tonight so if it sounds like you're sort of thing you'll be able to play along. If you do play we'd love to know what you think.

Also, as the game relies on live data, we get a lot of match stats that I thought you might be able to use in match reports especially as we're covering every game at the World Cup and for future Spurs matches, as they feature quite regularly on the game. During the match every single action is recorded, including interceptions, failed passes, and tackles and I thought these might help you analyse the game a little deeper or let you write about the performance of Spurs players at the World Cup. Here is an example of the match stats from the FA Cup replay at Leeds: http://football3s.com/matches/2862/match-stats (these show the Football3s points scored by the player but the number of each action can be worked out using the scoring summary: http://football3s.com/scoring).

If the game sounds interesting or you'd like the stats just send me an email to olly@football3s.com and I'll answer any questions you might have and would be more than happy to help.

    Regards,

    Olly
