Tottenham's £8 million mystery man

I can't have been the only Tottenham fan raising a bemused eyebrow when, this summer, the Tottenham website proclaimed itself 'happy to announce' the signings of Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton from Sheffield United for an eye watering sum of money. Using every tool available to a prestigious ITK such as myself (by which I mean Wikipedia, Youtube and Champ Manager) I scoured the virtual world for information on these two dubiously named characters. I expected a babble of excited anoraks speaking in hushed virtual whispers about Sheffield's best kept secret (excluding widespread community incest). In reality there was so little information even Comolli would have thought twice before having a punt.

I shall leave young Master Walker out of this on the basis that he was purchased for one of two reasons:

1) As a deal sweetener - With numerous clubs showing an interest in Naughton and Everton weighing in with a bid, 'Arry flogged the remainder of his 'genuine rolexs', jumped in his Reliant and motored up to Bramall Lane. The sum for Walker himself is believed to be nominal but with the promise of a loan back it was money in Kevin Blackwell's chubby little hands and a great incentive to deal with us and not Everton. A kind of buy one get one free (a little bit later on) deal.

2) As a future prospect - At the time of purchase Walker had only just broken into the Blades first team and had featured fleetingly for the U-19s. Throwing him into the physical and psychological side of the Premiership would be as about as irresponsible as letting Bentley park your car. He was never bought as the kind of player who could nonchalantly stroll into the 1st XI but as a bit of a gamble. Perhaps he will come good, more probably he will not but even to Levy, a man tighter than Tom Jones's face, £1-2 million isn't a lot of money. He's getting games for United, the Championship is more competitive than ever and all that experience can never be a bad thing. Watch this space...

So back to the real star of the show, Kyle Naughton. Despite his name he was not born in the Deep South, does not appear to favour caravans as a place of residence and does not (currently) have a pony tail. He is actually Sheffield born and bred, impressed throughout his academy days and even Arsene's professional team of child trappers were sniffing round him. 7-9 million odd is a lot of money for a left back, especially for one with no top tier experience. Pundits claimed he would play 'an important and immediate' role in 'Harry Redknapp's Tottenham project'. 5 months later and just one first team appearance in the 94th minute has left me more than a little perplexed. Anyone got any ideas?? I watched him pre-season and thought he looked quick, intelligent and incredibly composed on the ball for his age. We have Hutton as cover for right back and Bale as cover for the left, so Kyle is left bumping round with the reserves and the Academy boys. Why not a run out in the cups? Why not a loan?

Sitting in the reserves is never good for a player, both mentally and physically, especially not at an early stage in a player's development. That said, maybe his luck is about to turn. With Hutton being shoved out the exit door and BAE off to confront anonymous Cameroonian fans at the African Cup of Nations there is suddenly space on the bench. I am led to believe Naughton is a right back but is not afraid to play on the left. An injury or a couple of shockers from Bale, or Charlie being forced to play in the middle and suddenly there is a nice little shaven headed space in the first team. We have a unenviable reputation at Tottenham for ruining young talent and this cannot continue. Levy is a generous benefactor but we aren't Citeh and splurging money on 'complete' players is unsustainable. Come this January I'd love to see Naughton pulling on a Spurs shirt and getting some first team experience.

He doesn't have to be magic, I'm not expecting miracles.

That said it is Christmas...

  1. He's a right back

  2. Now then,

Just to let you know, Kyle Naughton is a right back, so please do your homework!!! In my opinion he's better than the right back currently playing for you. 'Arry as you call him really should give him a go, but then again if Naughton's agent hadn't been so greedy then he would have quite possibly been knocking on the door for England with Everton... (money talks now, pathetic!!!...)

Also as for Kyle Walker, he is possibly the best right back in the championship, he's the fastest i have seen in a long time... Glen Jonhson 18 million??? you having a laugh! 'Arry has an absolute bargain there pal....!!!

Anyhow Best of luck for the season, and with everything crossed that i can cross, we'll hopefully play you lot next season... (i'll forget you mentioned the incest bit, no need for that...)

  3. not very fair comments at all as a blade both kyles are great players and walker is fantatsic for us well havee naughton back if you dont want him .

  4. He has played both wing back roles. But for Hutton to be picked ahead of him just seems as though Harry doesn't fancy him at all.

  5. Hutton to leave, Naughton to be promoted to second choice right-back, and cover for Bale while BAE is away

    Would be good

  6. the reality is that Harry was expecting to sell Hutton and that never materialised, but looks good for this window. I still feel that Vedran Corluka will ultimately move inside and play CB in the near future and therefore allow Naughton to come in, but probably not before next season.

  7. ...who can play left back too!

  8. Naughton also looked very good in pre-season, when played on the right of midfield, with Hutton behind him at right back.

If Hutton and Bentley leave in January it's likely that we'll see a fair bit of Naughton before the end of the season. Otherwise we should let him go out on loan, as we don't even have a reserve side for him to play in these days.

  9. Walker has the potential to go all the way in the game. Odd lapse of concentration on the defensive side of things at the moment but he has it all - incredible pace, strength, skill.

Real shame to see Naughton languishing in your reserves. Doesn't quite have the physical attributes of Walker although he is quick but a lovely footballer.

Was really sad to see both go but makes it worse that Naughton isn't getting a game.

Rumours at our end that Naughton will be back at the (real) Lane on loan in January with Walker returning to Spurs.

  10. First things first, Naughton as I stated favours the right back position but has been tried for England and Spurs (admittedly only in pre-season and friendly fixtures) at left back and has never looked awkward.

Great to have the Blades fans on here and really useful to hear your opinions, especially on Walker who I know very little about. In my defence I don't think I made unfair comments about either player. I do think Walker is still too young and was bought for the future whilst I reiterate that I believe Naughton is "quick, intelligent and incredibly composed" if a little raw. Would absolutely love to see him given a run in the new year. Him and Lennon sprinting up and down that right side is a terrifying prospect.

As for the incest comment, thought you lads would appreciate a bit of banter, you had plenty to say at the Lane a couple of seasons back. Can't see past Forest and Newcastle for automatic promotion but best of luck, hope to see you up again.

  11. Decent reply pal,

Always liked the t'Spurs, i was actually at the FA Cup final v Forest in the 90s, my boss was a forest fan! Gazza what a man!

I'm just gutted we sold Walker at the same time because in my opinion he is better than Naughton, bigger & stronger to start with and would be worth alot more at the end of this season.., but not forgetting Naughton was awesome when he burst on the scene last season.

Im also gutted that Naughton hasn't played hardly at all this season, i was looking forward to him taking the p!ss out of premier league defences... as you say those two on the right flank would be a serious threat to any team, be great to to see them both for England too!

Seems as though all our investment in the academy is paying off, at last!

The incest reply was my sarcasm.... (doesnt come across in the written word!)

    All the best!

  12. I dont think that Spurs have a reserve team, can any one clarify that

    ReplyDelete
  13. They are not entered into a reserve league so do not have a set fixture list. The reserve squad does however play in numerous closed and open door friendlies throughout the season. Modric proved his fitness during one of these friendlies against Grays Athletic. This was the same game that caused 'Arry to criticise Bentley and Pav for not trying hard enough.

  14. Hutton was going to get sold to Everton but they didn't have the funds to cough up and went for naughton, so we nipped in and took him as Hutton will go this window, that's when Naughton will fight for his chance with Vedran corluka.
Harry is building a nice second team to really push the first team, with Bale, Naughton, walker Bostock, mason, Livermoore, Obika, and a few others he's building a team to come through together whilst gaining experience at smaller clubs playing first team football, plus with the new rules we will meet the criterier that UEFA require.

  15. I have heard Walker is talented but Naughton is the better of the two, I saw him and agree i was very impressed and have been wanting to see him instaed of corluka (who is the most boring player to watch) since the beginning of the season, Levy has said they have to make all the money they spend this January i would love to see naughton playing

  17. Both players are better than Jageilka was when he was at United at that age, you've got two England fullbacks of the future for sure, I personally think Walker will be the better of the two as he's a lot stronger and at times he shows lightening pace. As a Blade I would love to have seen Jags, Killa and the two kyles playing for us in the prem, as a back four, very few would have beaten them for pace or indeed at all. The Wembley playoff final showed just how good they both were, comfortably our best on the day.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The nominal fee you paid for Walker was £3 Million rising to £4M plus they both have sell on clauses if you sell them for more than you bought them for.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If you Spurs guys want to likened the two players to someone you know of it stature and pace:-
    Naughton = Ashley Cole
    Walker = Glen Johnson

    ReplyDelete
  20. Walker best right back in the championship?
That is easily held by Angel Rangel at swansea.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think its fair to say they were BOTH brought to the club for the future, although a high price to pay for future players, i think its fair to say and correct me if im wrong here (?), that the reason it was a high price is that these two are nailed on to be england wingers or indeed fullbacks of the future. That is the general concensus across the board and not just the views of Blades or Spurs fans. The future is bright...the future is indeed lilywhite!
    COYS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Walker is very quick and also has a very long throw and I metioned Walker going to spurs and Naughton going back to Sheffield. Naughton plays right back but he is left footed and that is why he looks comfertable this is what i read somwhere .

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wish you would let us have Naughton back for the rest of the season. You have bought two potential England stars of the future. Blades Season Ticket holder.

    ReplyDelete
  24. hope all the blades fans are right! naughton looked shit hot in pre-season, hope hutton does go so he gets a run in the first team. exciting hearing about walker's talents too!

    ReplyDelete
  25. In my experience there is a common trend with young players in england. They look like world beaters when they first come on the scene, get known and become overrated, get sold for a rediculous/inflated price, then become mediocre when the hysteria has gone. This happens in the preniership and the championship. Naughton started brilliant then began to fade for the last couple of months. He is technically good but too weak and thin and gets caught out defensively. We never knew his real position and I bet that is the case at tottenham as well. Right back, right midfield, central midfield? We tried him in all of these positions! He's not as good as he was made out to be and we quite rightly snapped your 9 carrat gold Sovereign clad fingers off at 8 million.

However, Walker (who was never hyped anywhere near as much as naughton) is head and shoulders a better player than naughton. He is one of the fastest players i have seen in the flesh and is strong and fearless. He's your man, youve got a bargain there!

ps - Inbread! You need to get out of london its making your head funny. Ed (blades til i die)

  26. Naughton could have been on the plane to SA if Spurs had played him more this season, he really is that good.

Walker i feel has the potential to move to centre back due to his strength advantage over Naughton.

Even at £11m for the pair you got a bargain, £18m for Glen Johnson and Naughton is x2 the player of Johnson.

  27. What a perfect example of a typical over reaction. Ed (blades til i die)

  28. Once again can't stress how great it is to have the Blades fans on here getting the knowledge across. Am feeling genuinelly excited about the prospect of these two but cannot understand why we didn't loan Naughton back to you for the beginning of the season. May well turn out to be a steal but this is spurs after all and chronic disappointment is an integral facet of our existence...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Naughton is still young and might not be ready for action as we all like to think. He seems to be a smart player who will be ready when called upon.

As for Walker, I'm hearing good things so far but he also would not have been ready for the Prem at this point.

Both are investments for the future. COYS!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks to the Blades fans for passing along some info :) Most of us have only seen Naughton in preseason, I was impressed but I think we should try him on the wings first. Defending in the PL is a daunting task for any youngster and I fear any mistakes could not only cost us the season but also screw up his confidence for a while, like Bale :(

Basically Hutton was supposed to be sold, but somehow ended up staying (probably Levy wanted too much money since we paid 7m for him, and most clubs don't have much atm). I think we'll manage to offload him this Jan though. He's been pretty poor defensively anyways so Naughton shouldn't be a downgrade despite less experience. I think Bentley will also be going this Jan, so he could also cover at RW.

Anyways both the Kyles are young, especially for defenders, so they should be slowly introduced to the league, and hopefully we will be in Europe next season where they can get more game time.
